In Memory Of
Martin Paul Wiener
1931 - 2017

Martin Paul Wiener died peacefully at home on January 10, 2017 at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia, children Andrea (partner, Deena Smith) and Michael (wife, Jenny Gilcrest) and granddaughters Natasha and Violet.

Marty was born on December 17, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York to Jean Wiener (nee Held) and Herman Wiener. He was graduated from Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science degree and Masters of Business as well as from Long Island University with a Masters in Science.

He went to work for General Electric in Valley Forge at the Space Engineering Plant where he was the head test engineer for the Nimbus, the first weather satellite. He met Amelia Potteiger at a friend’s wedding in 1958, they began dating early the next year and were married March 10, 1963. Over the next few years they became parents of two children, moved to New York and then Florida, where they settled.

While Marty’s career was spent primarily in computer-related sales, his passion was always volunteer service. Beginning when he was 18 and taught swimming for the Red Cross, his commitment to serve others continued until just a year before his death. He taught returning Vietnam Veterans, who had lost limbs, to swim for therapy; he instructed swimming to under-privileged children in Philadelphia; he volunteered with the Coalition for the Homeless in Orlando, he tutored at the after-school program for the Boys and Girls Club of Eatonville and did intake work for the medical charity, Shepherd’s Hope. His love for continuing education also led him to classes at the UCF LIFE program, where he served on committees and was President of the Board of LIFE for two years.

One of his greatest volunteer passions was rowing and the crew community in Orlando. He learned to row in the 1980s, becoming involved because his children rowed at Winter Park High School. He went on to row, coach, referee and participate in regattas around the United States and was proud of having been invited to referee at the Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for January 21st at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, 125 N. Interlachen Avenue, Winter Park, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Marty’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marty’s name to Shepherd’s Hope. www.ShepherdsHope.org/InMemory or Shepherd’s Hope, ATTN: Development Department 4851 S.
