In Memory Of
Dr. Lawrence Joseph Hurd
1952 - 2018

Lawrence Joseph Hurd was born April 3, 1952 in Sigourney, IA, the son of Lambert M. and Dorothy J. Walsh Hurd. He grew up on the family farm near Keswick, IA and was baptized at Immaculate Conception Church Armah, later confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church, North English, IA. Larry graduated from Deep
River-Millersburg School, class of 1970. In 1974 he graduated from Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville, MO, and in 1978 graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, IA. After graduation Larry began practice at Sherman Chiropractic in Hiawatha, IA. In 1983 he opened his private practice, Cascade Chiropractic, in Cascade, IA.

Lawrence was united in marriage to Lynn Sterrett, June 21, 1986 (as they always joked, “The Longest Day of the Year”), at Trinity Cathedral, Davenport, IA. The early years of their marriage were spent in Cascade, IA. Larry accepted a position on the faculty of Cleveland Chiropractic College, Kansas City, MO in 1988 and the couple relocated to Kansas City, where they remained for many years. He retired from teaching in December of 2010 and continued in private practice until 2014, when the Hurds followed their dream and Titusville, FL (“Whoville South”), became their permanent home.

Larry was an active leader in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City District of the Iowa Chiropractic Association. He also held memberships in the Gonstead Clinical Studies Society, Missouri Chiropractic Association, Palmer College of Chiropractic Alumni Association, International Chiropractic Association, American Chiropractic Association and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Larry was an avid space science enthusiast and enjoyed watching the space launches from the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral, both located nearby their Titusville home. He was also passionate about aviation, photography, reading, fishing, pheasant hunting, cooking and grilling/smoking “large pieces of animal flesh”, gardening, cycling and all things science, especially chemistry. Lawrence had several nicknames: Doc, Dr. Who, or Lars. Through the years, he loved traveling both within the USA and in other countries, going deep sea fishing, walking the beaches and observing manatees, dolphins, and whales. One of his greatest joys was entertaining and socializing with friends, and he especially loved their fur babies.

Lawrence passed away at his home, with his loving wife, Lynn, at his side, on Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents Lambert (2002) and Dorothy (2004) and his brother Daniel S. (2009). He leaves behind his wife Lynn, along with many friends and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to: Hospice of St. Francis, Inc., 1250-B Grussman Place, Titusville, FL 32780 or to a favorite charity. He will be missed by all who ever knew him and instead of goodbye, as he would have said--”LATER”
