1919 - 2015

Elizabeth (Jackson) Keyes of Casselberry, Florida (formerly of East Orange, New Jersey), died peacefully on June 27, 2015 in Orlando, Florida at the age of 96.

She was born on May 26, 1919 in Petersburg, VA, the youngest daughter of William Jackson and Eva (Sargeant) Jackson. Elizabeth was raised in Detroit, MI, and later moved to Newark, NJ. She graduated from Westside High School in Newark and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she married Tuskegee Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Keyes, Jr. in 1946. They divorced in 1964. Prior to her move to Florida, Elizabeth was a faithful member of Metropolitan Baptist Church of Newark.

Elizabeth was a fashion protégé of Emily Miles and worked behind the scenes as a costume repairer to the likes of Lena Horne and Billie Holiday who performed at Newark’s Symphony Hall. She retired as a full standing member of the International League of Ladies Garment Workers. She reinvented herself as a Home Health Aide working until age 83 until declining health.

She leaves one daughter, Deborah Keyes and son-in-law, Dean Angelos of Wayland, MA, son, Carlton Keyes of Casselberry, FL, sons of her heart, Henry Poindexter of Casselberry, FL and Lynson Gillstrap of E. Orange, NJ , grandchildren; Jermaine Keyes of New York City, NY, Fard Patterson of Newark, NJ, Lauren Angelos of Wayland, MA and Damien Angelos and wife Amy Tripodi Angelos of Somerville, MA, a host of other relatives, and many, many friends to cherish her memory.

Visitation is Wednesday July 1, 2015 from 10am to 11am with funeral service starting at 11am at the Newcomer Funeral Home (East Orlando Chapel).

Burial will follow at Orlando Memorial Gardens, Apopka, FL.

Elizabeth Jackson Keyes was a God fearing church attending woman. As any woman, she was complex. She was a pretty lady, and her faith and ability to forgive were always present. She was stubborn and strong- willed, she was friendly and loyal, she was talented yet her talents didn’t extend to the kitchen. She enjoyed making things and sewing. She was the type of person that kept her private life private, but her many friends told her all about theirs. She was a good friend and inspired others to be very loyal to her. She loved her church and loved her clothes. She deeply loved and cherished her children and grandchildren.

As a young woman she was a protégé of the grand dame of fashion, Newark’s, Emily Miles. Elizabeth kept up with the trends and styles and became known locally as a seamstress extraordinaire. Her work was marketed at such upscale chains as Bloomingdales, Bon Wit Teller and Sachs Fifth Avenue. At one point she had her own clothing label not connected to her normal employment. She retired from the Garment industry in the 1970’s.

She married Staff Sgt. and Tuskegee Airmen, Andrew J. Keyes Jr., in June 1946. They had met during WWII at a social held at Bethany Baptist Church (Newark, N.J.), where they both attended. They divorced in 1964. She never had a bad word to say against him.

She was always happy to help others, but she felt her best accomplishment was her children. She didn’t believe in spoiling her children or sparing the rod. She was always proud of her children’s success. She was the type of woman, if someone came to her door, who needed mothering, she would step in. She was the kind of Christian lady who offered a safe shelter to young people who came to her door whenever the situation called for it, but she was never exploited. She felt that everyone needed a place to come and be themselves.

After Elizabeth had retired from the world of fashion, she considered taking in foster children. However due to her age and becoming a grandmother, she studied and became a Home Health Aide.; an occupation she felt would be more valuable. She only stopped working at age 83 when her Alzheimer disease was revealed after a mild stroke.

Elizabeth Keyes was a church going, hat-wearing woman. After arriving here in Florida, she faithfully attended Joy Metropolitan Community Church from 2003 until she could no longer attend in 2007. The prayers of her friends and family kept Elizabeth in this world and she believed and survived due to God’s Grace. Elizabeth Jackson Keyes, this child of God, will be missed and remembered.
