On Sunday, May 24, 2020, Eugene Boyd Smith, loving husband, and father of four children, passed at the age of 87 at Winter Park Hospital, Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, Enoch, his mother, Laverne, and his brother, Terry. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn and his four children, Michael, David, Allison, and Richard and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in May of 2020.
Eugene Boyd Smith (“E.B.”) was born on July 21, 1932 in Lakeland, Florida. He moved to Sanford, Florida at a young age. E.B. attended Seminole High School where he played football with his lifelong best friend Charlie. Because of his red hair kids in school called him “Rooster,” but it was not a nickname that he liked. He was a restless youth and attended several colleges in Florida before settling on one. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon the end of the Korean War, he returned to college at Florida Southern on the GI Bill where he met his future wife and graduated with a degree in agriculture. E.B. and Marilyn were married in Chicago, Illinois (Marilyn’s hometown) and settled in Bartow, Florida where E.B. worked for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Marilyn taught elementary school. E.B.’s career in agriculture spanned from growing mums in Stuart, Florida, to citrus in Central Florida. E.B. had a passion for golf and as a child dreamt of becoming a professional golf player. On his days off, you would find him at the country club playing a round of golf or a hand of gin rummy. He retired in his early sixties when he and Marilyn moved to Columbus, Mississippi, then to Las Vegas, Nevada, and then back to Apopka, Florida. He was a lifelong Boston Celtics fan and his favorite player of all time was Larry Bird. In his retired years he loved to watch college football with his sons, play poker and meet his friends for breakfast. His retired life was full of active involvement with his son’s businesses, Elk’s Club, and spending time with friends and family.
