We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Sheila Underwood (Berg) of Oviedo, Florida on June 20, 2020.
Sheila was born in the Bronx, NY on January 23, 1962 to Roland and June Berg. Soon after, the family moved to New Milford, NJ where Sheila attended New Milford High School. After graduating high school Sheila moved to Syracuse, NY to attend school at Syracuse University and met the love of her life, Gary. They were true soul mates and best friends and shared a deep love of music. Happily married for 33 years they enjoyed working together at their music store, travelling throughout the world, and just relaxing at home in their Zen-filled backyard.
Sheila and Gary moved to Brooklyn for several years where Sheila worked as a bank manager in Borough Park. In 1990, their son David was born. Sheila was a devoted mother and loved nurturing his interests which led to a lasting passion for intellectual pursuits in his life. Sheila also knew the importance of balance and loved spoiling him with fun things like Legos and Pokémon.
Soon after moving to Florida, Sheila and Gary opened Gary Underwood Music, a musical instrument repair and sale shop in Winter Park. They built a successful business together repairing instruments for some of the top musicians in the country as well as serving local schools and their students. Later, David, became a partner in the business ensuring the continuing legacy of excellence that Gary Underwood Music has come to represent. Part of the business’ success was due to Sheila’s personal touch and genuine interest in the customers and their families.
In 1997 Sheila returned to school at the University of Central Florida and earned a degree in Music Education. She taught band and general music (1st-3rd grades) at Tuskawilla Montessori Academy for 10 years while also maintaining her responsibilities at the music store.
In addition to music, Sheila loved to see new places, and was especially fond of exploring natural settings throughout Florida. She also travelled extensively in the US, as well as many countries in Europe and South America, making lasting memories with Gary and David. She also enjoyed sharing good food with good friends at family-run restaurants throughout the area.
Sheila is survived by her loving husband Gary, her son David, brother Ronald and sister-in-law Rosanne, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.
Having both parents affected by Alzheimer’s Disease, Sheila was committed to supporting research that was focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Private service will be held by the family. Family requests masks for those that attend.
