In Memory Of
Phulmati Ramdass
1929 - 2022

My mother, Phulmati Ramdass, was born in Albion Estate, Guyana on December 25, 1929. She passed away on August 13, 2022 in Orlando, Florida.

Her parents were the late Jagroop Jagsaran and Rajkalia Ramkissoon.

At the age of 12, her mother died leaving her with the task of taking care of her father, younger brothers and sister. My mother had to do all the chores before going to school and after school.

Her father wanted to take her out of school. Fortunately for her, the Headmaster/Principal of the school (Mr. Baburam) heard about it and decided to visit her father. He told her father that he will not allow him to take my mother out of school. The principal was kind enough to permit her to take her two young brothers to school with her. They were 2 and 4 years old. My mother was able to complete school and was supposed to be a teacher but her dad said NO to that offer.

She got married to her now deceased husband, Bhulasi Ramdass, AKA, Robert Chulia at the age of 18 and went to live in Port Mourant. She was self-employed-raised backyard chicken and ducks, also grew her own fruits and vegetables. She was a remarkable person working hard to make sure that all her children completed high school. My parents had 5 children (2 boys and 3 girls). She is survived by 2 of her children, 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Phulmati migrated to New York in 1989 where she worked as a Home Attendant until 2003. She then moved to Florida to be closer to her loved ones. She spent most of her time at ther son’s house. After he passed away in January 2011, my mother came to live with me and my family in Wedgefield.

She loves freedom to do things and be independent. We wanted her to have a happy life so we tried our best to make her comfortable.

Phulmati will always be remembered as a kind-hearted, loving and talented person. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, family and friends.

Visitation is Thursday, August 18 from 7PM-9PM at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Orlando Chapel. Visitation Friday August 19 11AM-12PM. Funeral services will follow at 12PM. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Orlando.
