Albert D. Gilbert, known affectionately by many as "Alby," passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Born on May 27, 1934, in Manhattan, New York, with Tuberculosis and developed Polio as child. Albert lived a life distinguished by devotion, hard work, and an enduring spirit that touched all who knew him.
Albert’s career was marked by dedication and skill. He served as a mechanic at Grumman Aerospace for over twenty years, where he played an integral role in the assembly of the first lunar module—a contribution of which he was immensely proud. Following this, he brought his commitment to service as a transporter at Stony Brook University Medical Center for a decade. In retirement, Albert continued to be active and engaged, working in maintenance and greeting patrons at Publix, where his friendly and compassionate nature endeared him to many.
A man of deep faith and strong character, Albert was known for his kindness, love, and compassionate demeanor. Those close to him remember him as outspoken and teasing—often playfully pestering his wife Phyllis or delighting in good-natured jests directed at his children and grandchildren. His sharp wit and affectionate humor were hallmarks of his personality. He loved watching baseball, basketball, and football, and he was a proud fan, especially fond of teasing his daughter Marcella and her husband Benny whenever the Pittsburgh Steelers lost. His hobbies reflected a creative spirit; he enjoyed building model airplanes and ships, constructing Lego sets well into his later years, playing pool, and recalling childhood nostalgia playing stickball. Golf and fishing also remained favorite pastimes, bringing him joy and relaxation.
Albert's greatest pride was his family. He cherished his wife, Phyllis M. Gilbert, his son Reginald (Adelle) W. Gilbert, and daughters Denise (Paul) M. Callow, Marcella (Benny) R. Simms, and Lynette (James) T. Farrelly. He was a devoted father to sons Donald (Kimberly) T. Elliby, John A. Elliby, and Robert G. Elliby, Joseph T. White Sr., "son" and held close his grandchildren Alesha (Coty) M. Gilbert, Joseph T. White, Jr., Shakeya D. White, Noelle Gilbert, Gabrielle E. Farrelly, Mallory N. Gilbert, Alexa V. Callow, Jaiya N. Callow, and Marshall Gilbert. Albert found special joy in the accomplishments of his granddaughter Alesha, who became a real estate agent—an achievement that filled him with pride.
He also leaves behind his sister Marcella Gilbert Jacobs, niece Lauren (Renato) L. Jacobs-Nava, nephews Steven Johnson and Ricky Phillips, and cousins Dennis (Jackie) Howell and Eldridge "Skip" (Paulette) Gilbert. Albert was preceded in death by his father, Albert Gilbert, mothers Catherine M. Howell Gilbert and Ida Lucille Gilbert, and son Wade A. Elliby.
Known to many as the best grandfather in the world, Albert’s legacy is one of unwavering love, steadfast faith shared with Pastor Mark Mueller and his church family. His lively spirit never ceased to bring warmth and laughter to those around him. Memories of his affectionate teasing, his heartfelt calls to his daughters about his beloved wife Phyllis, and his heartfelt compassion will forever remain treasured.
