Listen to Obituary

Alta Umphlett Gray, January 25th, 1939 to July 21st, 2026.

Born in Gates, North Carolina, the twelfth of thirteen children to Lucy and Mills Umphlett. She grew up on her family’s rural farm, learning the values of hard work, faith, kindness, and the importance of family, values that remained the cornerstone of her life.

She married her first-grade sweetheart, Henry Eugene Gray, building a life rooted in love and commitment. They had two daughters, Rhonda and Gina. In 1969, they moved from North Carolina to Central Florida, embracing a new lifestyle.

Alta enjoyed a successful career as a human resources director before retiring to care, nurture, and love her granddaughters. She was the picture of Southern grace, remembered for her homemade biscuits, love of dark chocolate raisins, shopping, love of leopard print, Elvis, Cadillacs, and diamonds.

Those who knew Alta remember her beautiful smile, her generous spirit, and her remarkable gift for making people feel loved. Her love for her husband Eugene built a strong and beautiful foundation that continues through the generations. She will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, grace, and devotion to family will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Alta is survived by: Daughter Rhonda Louise Gray, and husband, Michael Finch, Daughter Gina Gray Smith and husband, Patrick Smith, Granddaughter Emma Kelly Flynn and husband, Matthew Flynn, Granddaughter Abby Louise Baker and husband, Justin Baker and son Brooks Henry Baker, Granddaughter Hannah Louise Rojas, and husband Moises Rojas, Granddaughter Liv Selders, Sister Marion Christine Spivey, Sister Gladys Faye Hoffler, Brother Mills Quinton Umphlett.

Her family finds comfort knowing that the love she shared will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
