It is with profound love and admiration that we commemorate the extraordinary life of Beatriz Curry, who passed away June 6, 2025. Born in the city of Cartagena, Colombia, Beatriz entered a world constrained by archaic social conventions and a male-dominated society. Yet, even in her youth, she possessed a spirit that refused to be confined.
Early in her life, after graduating from high school, Beatriz broke free from these societal chains, forging a path as an independent woman. Inspired by the myriad books she devoured, she sought to earn her own living, finding her passion in the fledgling tourist industry. Her insightful observations and sharp wit soon led her to become a columnist for Diario de la Costa. While her ultimate dream of studying journalism was a bittersweet aspiration truncated by life's beautiful complexities, including marriage and the joy of raising six children, her ultimate dream of becoming a novelist never dimmed.
As she built her family, Beatriz continued to work tirelessly, even establishing a successful hotel business. However, her inherent disdain for stifling social conventions eventually led her to make a courageous decision: to move to the United States—a single mother with six children in tow. In a testament to her unwavering strength and resilience, she miraculously managed to raise her growing family in a new land, navigating countless challenges. She worked tirelessly, from waitressing and operating deafening factory machines to selling cookies and eventually building a career in the cruise ships industry.
Amidst these demanding roles, this tough and indomitable woman achieved her literary aspirations, penning four compelling novels and countless poems. Her stories often explore the depths of impossible love and the harsh realities of society, which she magically transforms with themes of happiness and fairness. It was in one of her most challenging environments, a sweltering factory amidst deafening machines, that she managed to write one of her most cherished poems, "Dios Salve a los Poetas" (God Save the Poets), a testament to her ability to find beauty and purpose in the most trying times.
Beatriz's adventurous spirit also led her to marry again and travel half the world, embracing life with an insatiable curiosity. Her legacy is profound and enduring, living on through her five successful children: a businesswoman, an architect, a teacher, and professionals in health and travel. She instilled in them, and all who knew her, the invaluable lesson that even in the worst of times, creativity and hope can flourish.
She was blessed with a large family and preceded in death by her adored husband, David Curry and her beloved daughter, Yadira Hernandez. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Beatrice Mynett, Miguel Hernandez, Patty Smith, Vicky Ortiz and Alfonso Hernandez; her dear sister, Evita DeLeon Gonzalez; her cherished 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Beatriz Curry will be remembered as a pioneer, a dreamer, a prolific writer, and a loving matriarch whose life embodied courage, resilience, and the power of defying expectations. She lived a life unbound, inspiring countless others to pursue their passions regardless of circumstance.
Her legacy of kindness, grit, dedication and love will live on in the hearts of all her loved ones.
