Charles M. Slater

Charles McClure Slater, 86, of Longwood, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at AdventHealth Hospice, surrounded by his family. Born on June 18, 1938, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Charles lived a full and devoted life defined by integrity, hard work, and unwavering commitment to his family. Charles proudly served in the United States Navy as a technician before embarking on a distinguished 30+ year career with IBM. His dedication and work ethic were unmatched—traits he carried into every part of his life and instilled in his daughters. He was a man of strength and deep compassion. A true “Mr. DIY,” Charles was always working on a project, fixing something around the house, or lending a hand to his daughters and their families. He found joy in RV camping adventures, cheering on NASCAR, and simply being there for his family in every way. 

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemary Slater, daughters Lisa Bruns, Lori Evenson, and Shannon Dowell; sons-in-law Robert Bruns and Rob Dowell; brother Robert Slater; and grandchildren Abbi Dowell (and her fiancé Angel Ortiz), David Dowell, Hannah Bruns, and Alec Evenson. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Slater Ortiz. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother and grandson, Nickolas Evenson. Charles is also lovingly remembered by many friends and extended family as the “favorite uncle” or devoted friend. Charles will be remembered as an honorable man—tough yet tender, humble, and fiercely devoted to his family. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 7, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 335 E. State Rd. 434, Longwood, FL 32750. The family will greet guests from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the service at the home of Rosemary Slater at 559 Twisting Pine Ct., Longwood, FL 32779.
