Elena Cirilo Melendez

Elena Cirilo Melendez, 91, of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and raised in The Bronx, New York, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born on October 7, 1934, Elena, known affectionately as Lynn, Abuela, Lita, Mami Lynn, or simply Mami, was a loving mother, devoted wife, caring sister, and a cherished friend. Elena was a woman of many interests and many chapters. She owned a hair salon in New York, managed her husband’s restaurant, and later dedicated herself to caring for her children full time. She lived many lives and faced more than her share of life’s challenges. But she never gave up. She powered through every obstacle placed in her path and somehow found a way to make flowers grow from nothing. She was strong, determined, fierce, and brave. She never took “no” for an answer, and when life pushed back, Elena pushed harder. She carried a strength within her that could not easily be shaken, along with a determination to keep moving forward, protect the people she loved, and make something beautiful out of whatever life placed in her hands. Her passions were as colorful and full of life as she was. She loved cooking and gardening, finding joy in creating something delicious in the kitchen and watching something beautiful grow. She also loved the slot machines. She enjoyed the thrill of pulling that lever, always hopeful that the next spin would be the lucky one. And if it wasn’t, well, there was always another spin. Elena knew how to have a good time and was never one to walk away from a party. She threw the best parties, and she loved attending them.But above all, she treasured spending time with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and gave her countless memories. Elena was also a deeply social person who loved being surrounded by people. She had a gift for making friends and maintaining lifelong friendships, and her circle of friends was wide and filled with people who loved her dearly. She enjoyed good conversation, laughter, companionship, and simply being in the company of others. Wherever Elena went, she had a way of making connections, and many people were fortunate enough to call her a friend. Elena’s greatest legacy lives on through her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Wanda Garcia and her husband, Teddy Del Valle, Hector Garcia, Madelyn Garcia and her partner, Claudia Orozco, and David Garcia and his wife, Lizette Rosado. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Ricardo Del Valle and his spouse, Jennifer Del Valle; Karla Garcia Ragatzki and her spouse, Robert Ragatzki; Gabriel Del Valle and his spouse, Christine Del Valle; Alexandra Del Valle Lowe and her spouse, John Lowe; Andres Garcia; and Camila Garcia. She was also blessed with three beloved great-grandchildren, Julian Del Valle, Rafael Del Valle, Noah Del Valle, and two cherished bonus grandchildren Thalialyz and Zylailah Ramos. She is also lovingly remembered by her sister, Iraida Suarez, the last surviving sibling of Elena’s generation.

The last Bible passage read to Elena was Psalm 23. In her final moments, these words offered comfort, peace, and the reminder that she was never alone.“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23
