Faira Charmaine Hamm

Faira Charmaine Hamm, born on August 29, 1937, departed this life peacefully on July 30, 2026. Throughout her eighty-eight years, Faira illuminated the lives of all who knew her—truly embodying a “Light in the Darkness.”

Faira’s early years were marked by her time as a majorette at Winter Haven High School, a period filled with spirit and dedication that highlighted her lively and engaging nature. Her thirst for learning and deeper experiences led her to the Monteverde Academy Boarding School, shaping her as a young woman of strength and grace.

In 1957, Faira became a dedicated homemaker, a role she cherished deeply. She was not only a devoted mother but also one who devoted her life to caring for others with unparalleled love and generosity. Her commitment to nurturing family created a sense of unity and warmth that will be fondly remembered by many.

Her professional life included time as a telephone operator for Bellsouth, where her remarkable communication skills came to the fore. Faira naturally sought to connect with everyone around her and would try to communicate with everyone she met—even if she didn’t know their language. It was in these everyday interactions that she frequently made people feel seen and heard, fostering genuine connections both near and far.

Faira was the heart of her family and community. She was profoundly giving, never missing a chance to dote on others, whether through her delicious meals, kind gestures, or simple words of encouragement. Many remember her for “feeding everyone” with both food and compassion, a testament to her enduring spirit of generosity.

Her loved ones recall her laughter and joy, especially the precious moments spent going to plays with her beloved daughter, Melony, and cherishing every moment with her son, Marshall II. Family gatherings were always brightened by her wit, infectious laughter, and her talent for playing the organ, filling rooms with music and warmth. She adored partaking in plays, relished listening to and creating music, and found delight in having her hair done—a simple pleasure she never tired of. Faira’s faith was the cornerstone of her life, as she dedicated herself to spreading the Gospel and living her beliefs with humble devotion.

Her legacy continues through those she leaves behind: her children, Melony and Marshall II; her grandchildren, Cassandra Cross, Kenneth Cross II, Leo Cross, Aspen Cross, Sequoia Cross, Lynsey Hamm, Marshall Hamm III, and McKenzie; her 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild, Arwen. Each carries forward her memory and her values of family, faith, and kindness.

She is also remembered with love by the memory of her dearly departed husband, Marshall Hamm; her father, Rufus J. Ellerby; her mother, Maxine Westbrook Ellerby; and her grandson, Cedar Cross.

Her enduring spirit of caring for others, her welcoming smile for all, and her steadfast devotion to family and faith will be forever treasured. Through every stage of her journey, Faira was unwavering in her resolve to put others before herself.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at Eastland Baptist Church, located at 9000 Lake Underhill Road, Orlando, FL 32825, on August 8, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, 1603 Greenwood Street, Orlando, FL 32801, on August 10, 2026.

Faira Charmaine Hamm’s love, compassion, and radiant presence leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
