Gerald D. Simmons, a lifelong resident of Orlando and a pillar of the Central Florida agricultural and construction communities, passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 87. Gerald was a proud descendant of a Florida pioneer family with roots in Orange County dating back to the 1800s.
Born in Orlando on February 8, 1939, Gerald grew up with a deep love for sports and the outdoors. As a teenager, his desire to play ball was so strong he joined the local Methodist Church just to play on their teams with his brothers. This passion for the game followed him into adulthood; he played competitive fast-pitch softball for years until his sons were old enough for Little League. He then traded his jersey for coaching, mentoring his boys from their first swings through Big League play.
Gerald was defined by an ironclad work ethic that touched every endeavor he pursued. From his early days of nursery work at “Sangster’s Gangsters” to his lifelong construction business and his cattle operations, he led by example. That same grit and determination are his greatest legacy, clearly passed on to each of his four sons.
A respected figure in Florida agriculture, Gerald was a longtime member of the Orange County Cattlemen’s Association, where he served in numerous leadership roles, including President and Treasurer. His unwavering support for local cattle operations earned him the distinction of Honorary Director of the Florida Cattlemen's Association.
When he wasn’t working the land or on a job site, Gerald was happiest in the woods or on the water. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but for Gerald, the true prize was always the camaraderie and the memories made with friends and family during those get-togethers.
Gerald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bobbi Simmons. He is survived by his four sons and their wives: David (Jacqueline), Doug (Shereen), Paul (Rebecca), and Kevin (Traci). He leaves behind a sprawling legacy of nine grandchildren: Sylvia, Doug, Amy, Dakota, Kari, Claire, Eric, Lily, and Ashley; ten great-grandchildren: Sage, Madison, Sophia, Jesse, Hunter, Beau, Dawson, Addalynne, Hazel, and Cameron; and his siblings, Alvin Simmons, Leland Simmons, and Marilyn Tinnes.
A graveside funeral and committal service will take place on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 10:00 am at Christmas Cemetery, 23643 Christmas Cemetery Rd, Christmas, FL 32709.
