Herbert Bates, known affectionately as Herby, passed away on February 10, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of joy, service, and community spirit. Born on September 27, 1954, in Mayking, he lived a life rich in experiences and accomplishments, firmly rooted in his love for family and friends.
Herby's career was marked by dedication and commitment. He worked at Martin Marietta for several years before pursuing his passion as a handyman, running his own successful business called Handyman Herb. His skills and generosity made him a beloved figure within the community, always ready to lend a hand or share a smile.
A proud veteran, Herbert served in the Navy as a Seabee, where he gained invaluable experience that shaped his character and guided his principles. His time serving his country instilled a sense of pride and duty that he carried throughout his entire life.
Outside of work, Herby's adventurous spirit shone through in his hobbies and interests. An enthusiastic baker, thrilling dwarf car driver, and devoted pyrotechnic enthusiast, he brought excitement to every aspect of his life. He was particularly known for his detailed RC courses, miniature trucks, and dazzling fireworks displays during the Polly family reunions, leaving lasting memories for many.
Herby was much more than just a participant in his church; he was an active and dedicated member. For 32 years, he served faithfully as a church greeter, extending warmth and kindness to all who entered. He often fed the church congregation, ensuring that everyone felt welcome and cared for, and took on the role of church security, safeguarding the community he loved.
In his personal life, Herbert was a source of strength and joy for his family. He is survived by his beloved father Herbert, his siblings, Belinda Ekaitis, Michael Bates, Theresa Hunt, his sister-in-law, Michelle Bates, as well as his brothers-in-law Larry Hunt and Richard Bartley. He cherished his many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, enjoying every moment spent with them.
Herbert was preceded in death by his loving mother, Jo-Ann Bates, and his sisters, Tammy Bates Bartley and Holly Ann Bates, who will be lovingly remembered alongside him.
Herby's proudest accomplishments extended beyond his business endeavors; his friendships and unwavering support for his loved ones were integral to his identity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, remembered for his indelible spirit, unwavering loyalty, and the joy he brought into the lives of others.
