Winter Garden

John W. Cross, known affectionately as “JW,” passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Winter Garden, Florida. Born on June 1, 1928, in Vienna, Georgia, he went on to leave an indelible mark on all who knew him throughout his remarkable life.

JW proudly served his country for four years in the United States Army, where he was a Tank Commander stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky during the Korean War. His dedication and service were a testament to his character, reflecting the same kindness, love, and generosity that would define his personal relationships and community involvement.

For over thirty years, JW worked as an Employment Officer in the postal service, where his kind demeanor and knowledgeable support assisted countless individuals in finding their paths. He also lent his talents to Calvary Christian Church, serving as treasurer for a decade, ensuring that the church could fulfill its mission in the community.

Family was at the center of JW's world. He cherished the family vacations they enjoyed together at Longboat Key, which became treasured memories for him and those he loved. He was the proud father of three sons: Dennis Wayne Cross, Alan J. Cross, and Randy Cross, along with their loving wives Shawn Cross, Betty Cross, and Lori Cross. The bond he shared with his children extended to his five beloved grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.

JW also had a special sister, Betty Joyce Knight, who he held dear throughout his life. He is now reunited with his late wife, Elizabeth Cross, and his beloved sisters, Laverne Peavey and Annette Bridges.

In his leisure time, JW found joy in fishing, gardening, and daily walks, reveling in the beauty of nature. He had a passion for cooking, often creating meals infused with love for those around him. His loyal dog Toby was a constant companion, providing him with companionship and joy.

A celebration of JW's life will be held on August 13, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church located at 631 South Dillard Street, Winter Garden, FL. The visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. He will then find his final resting place at Winter Garden Cemetery North at 12:30 PM.

John W. Cross will be remembered as a loving and devoted family man, a generous soul, and a source of laughter and light in the lives of many. His legacy of love and devotion to his family will continue to resonate through the generations he cherished so deeply.
