John Walter Golsong, Jr. died peacefully at home with his loved ones at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret (Dunn) and John Walter Golsong, Sr. and his younger brother Casey and wife Barbara.
John was born in Long Island City and grew up in Cambria Heights in Queens, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School and then went on to Polytechnic Institute of NYU. While at Polytech he started learning construction with his Uncle Nick, who is responsible for John’s nickname, Butch.
At 21, he enlisted in the Army where he spent 2 years in France; mostly playing baseball. He then joined his father as a construction engineer in New York City. In 1969, he met a widow with 4 children, Carol Donofrio Kluesener, who he called the “love of his life”, and in 1971, they were married. In 1976, they moved to Florida to start their own business with hopes of a cleaner, more affordable life. While living with 4 unhappy teen-agers who left all of their friends behind, John did his best to help Carol raise responsible adults. At a low point in their lives, he blurted out in exasperation, “I love them as much as you do, you know!” even though that love was not appreciated or reciprocated at the time. We had to “grow” to love him. Family was the most important thing in his life and he made sure he was present for all of the major events in our lives as well as countless minor events.
He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, boating, fishing, pinochle and other card games with his “adult” children and their families.
John is survived by his youngest brother Terry, eight nieces and nephews, his four children: Karen Hauser (Ed), Richie Kluesener (Shelley), Cheryl Kluesener and Kenny Kluesener. He was most proud of, and is survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and counting. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
