Maria Margarita “Mama” Vega Lugo, age 71, passed away on January 7, 2026, at 7:33 a.m. in
Orlando, Florida, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Maria lived a life devoted to her family and those who needed the comfort of a mother’s care. To most, she was not simply Maria she was Mama—a title she carried with pride and lived out daily.
Mama had a presence that could fill a room. She was funny, energetic, and full of life. Maria loved having her family together, filling her home with conversation, music, and the irresistible aroma of her cooking. If you were near her, you were fed—no exceptions. She welcomed everyone with open arms, but was also fiercely protective of her loved ones and never tolerated disrespect. Her strength was matched only by her kindness.
In her later years, Maria faced significant medical challenges with remarkable courage. Even when her body grew tired, her spirit never did. Her love remained constant, her sense of humor intact, and her desire to be present for her family unshaken.
She is survived by her loving partner, Juan Montesdeoca; her daughters, Maria Cordero Vega and Zulma Cordero Vega; her son, Juan Cordero Vega; her fourteen grandchildren—Juan Cordero Jr., Lorena Vega, William Merced, Edwin Oliveras, Maida Merced, Gilberto Oliveras, Jereniel Oliveras, Rebecca Rivas, Javier Rivas, Lilly Merced, Maria Christina Rodriguez, Zulmary Cordero, and Javier Cordero; and her six great-grandchildren: Catarina Cordero, Maleah Ramirez, Aleya Garcia Vega, Luna Ramos, Alonzo Ramirez, and Lyan Garcia Vega.
Mama’s legacy is not measured in years, but in the love she gave. She was a protector, a provider, a listener, and a safe place for so many. Her presence shaped lives, her words brought peace, and her memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Though she is no longer with us in body, Mama’s love will continue to guide, comfort, and surround her family always and forever.
