He was born Ciales, Puerto Rico. He was an engineer for the United States Department of Defense.
Nicanor is survived by his wife, Maria Zayas; mother, Angelica Serrano; son, Jose Nicanor Zayas Gonzalez; sister, Haydee Zayas, brother, Otoniel Zayas; two grandsons, Hayden Alexander Zayas Morris and Hogan Michael Zayas Morris.
