Robert Charles Barfield, 90, entered his Eternal Heavenly home on July 22, 2025.
Born in Philadelphia, PA; he was a son of John Heyward Barfield, Sr. and Mildred Bertha (née Finias) Binkley.
Robert served in the Army and Navy during the Korean War, and was nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions during combat with the 187th Airborne Infantry at the Battle of Boomerang. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, and Purple Heart. He was on the Army and Navy boxing teams. He even had a short pro boxing career in Orlando, where he was known as the “Fighting Mailman” while employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office.
Robert was also a talented singer and songwriter, enjoyed metal detecting and antique hunting, and was a practical joker who loved to cut up and laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Deborah “JJ” Kay (née Carney); sons Robert Jr., Larry (Brittany), Danny (Yoshi) and Tracy (Deborah L); and daughter, Terri Blanchard (Clay); several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his first wife, Creta (née Banister) Thompson Beekman.
His remains will be laid to rest at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL at a later date. Check back to this page for updates on service and committal information.
