Sandra Romero was born on September 25th 1951 in Manhattan, New York. She entered eternity on November 5th 2024 at her home surrounded by loved ones. Sandra was born to Puerto Rican parents, Miguel Romero, a chef who owned his own restaurant, “La Nueva Islita” and to Agustina Romero, a seamstress and master gardener. A graduate of the City University of New York (Bachelor’s) and of Long Island University (Master’s), Sandra dedicated her life to being an elementary school teacher for both New York City Public Schools and Orange County Florida Public Schools. While in college, Sandra was a big woman’s right advocate, participating in the “Burn Your Bra” movement and taking her stance with the administration of the school through peaceful demonstrations. The bulk of her career was spent at P.S. 314 in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood. Sandra was awarded and recognized for numerous activities including piloting an apple computer program for her inner-city school children and for being a leader throughout her school. She was a pioneer of bilingual programs in the public-school educational system. Sandra had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of children and often had former students approach her and tell her what she had meant in their lives and how she had wonderfully affected them. In addition to her work, Sandra had a passion for her hobbies such as scrapbooking and cake decorating, for music particularly bachata music, and for her family.
Sandra will be remembered for her overwhelming kindness, extreme patience, huge loving heart, and joyous sense of humor. She was a good sport and could take teasing as well she could give it. Sandra made a friend everywhere she went and was loved by many. Although twice divorced, she maintained a friendly and cordial relationship with both her exes, Jose Alberto Bellaflores and Miguel Angel Camacho. She enjoyed baking and cooking with her grandchildren, with one of her specialties being rainbow pancakes. Sandra loved to do special projects with her grandchildren which could include anything from painting a picture, learning about Puerto Rican culture, learning about Jesus and the bible, to making beautiful seasonal crafts. Her granddaughters cherished their time with her. Sandra enjoyed “game night” with her daughters and granddaughters and was a whiz at Uno, Parchessi, and Pokeeno. Sandra was an avid reader who enjoyed mystery and romance novels. She was also a fan of reality, game, and cooking shows with some of her favorites being 90 Day Fiancé, The 1%, and Beat Bobby Flay.
Sandra is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Juliana Sandra Rodriguez and by her parents Miguel and Agustina Romero.
