Thelma Townsend

Thelma Myator Townsend, age 90, of Winter Springs, Florida passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Ernesto Townsend, Sr. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Townsend, Audrey Bowen, Charmaine Townsend, step-daughter, Margaret James, step-son, Donald Ernesto Townsend, Jr., 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and 3 nephews, sister, Olga Campbell and cousins. 

Thelma Townsend was born on December 1, 1934 in St. Ann, Jamaica to Clifford and Irene Grant. In January of 1957 she became a registered nurse and 3 months later on April 24, 1957, she married Donald Townsend to whom she was married to for 63 years. 

In 1969, Thelma moved to the US Naval station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to join her husband Donald. She lived a life marked by dedication and service to others. Her years in Guantanamo shaped much of her life’s work.She worked in childcare and then as a Morale Welfare Recreation Assistant for 17 years where she served as the manager of the ceramic shop on the base. She was a creative and hardworking individual who enjoyed several hobbies including ceramics, crocheting, bowling and gardening. She earned several trophies and patches as a member of a bowling team. She also was recognized for her excellent service in the ceramic hobby shop. After moving to Orlando in 1991, she continued to care for others, first as a nanny for her grandchildren and then for several other families. Her faith was central to her life and she found a strong sense of community and belonging at Faith Assembly of God for over 30 years.Thelma lived a life of devotion to God, her family and friends. Many have been touched by her kindness, self-sacrifice and loyalty. She has fought a good fight. She has finished her course, and she kept the faith. 

 Visitation is Monday, January 20, 2025 from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm with funeral starting at 1:30 pm at Faith Assembly - Stephens Chapel, 9307 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, FL 32825. 

Interment will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, FL.
