Thomas Waring, known affectionately as Tom, Dad, or Papa to those who loved him, passed away on May 13, 2026, in his birthplace of Orlando, Florida. Born on January 10, 1934, Tom's life was marked by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to family and craft.
A proud veteran, Tom served his country with honor in the United States Air Force for four years and continued his service as a reservist for an additional four years. Following his military tenure, he devoted over four decades to the meticulous repair of printing presses, mastering machines both great and small. Tom was known far and wide for his remarkable ability to fix anything, approaching every challenge with patience, attention to detail, and the quiet strength of a hard-working, down-to-earth man.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom cherished his role as a second father figure to his grandchildren. He invested countless hours playing games, assembling puzzles, and sharing moments of connection filled with patience and love. These memories, along with cherished family camping trips through the Blue Ridge Mountains, captured the essence of his gentle spirit and the importance he placed on family togetherness.
In retirement, Tom found solace and joy in the peaceful natural surroundings of Elk Creek, Virginia, where he spent treasured times with his beloved wife, Patricia. His love of fishing, hiking, camping, gardening, and reading underscored a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and the simple pleasures of nature. During their visits, Tom made many friends, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Tom’s legacy is deeply rooted in the lives of those he leaves behind. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Waring; his son, Steven Waring, and daughter-in-law Vivian; his daughter, Carolyn Bourke; and his grandchildren Billy Grass, Rachel Keeton, Haley Lausier, and Andrew Bourke. He also delighted in the company of his great-grandchildren Morgan, Millie, Alexa, Dylan, Taleah, Dylan, Dustin, Abigail, Mason, and Arlen, as well as his great-great-grandson Maverick. He also had a special relationship with many of his nieces and nephews. These generations carried forward the love and values that Tom held dear.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Waring; mother, Mary Waring; brother, Richard Waring; sister, Margaret Heitz; daughter, Cindy Grass; and grandsons Michael Grass and Daniel Grass.
Tom’s proudest accomplishments were the life he shared with Patricia and the nurturing of his children and grandchildren. He was a man special to many, loved for his steady presence, generosity, and unwavering devotion. Though he was a strong, silent type, his actions spoke volumes, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
In honoring Thomas Waring’s life, one remembers a patient craftsman, a devoted family man, and a true friend to many—a soul who could fix anything and who would do anything for anyone. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
